Just a quick reminder that the Porter Family will be giving a FREE musical performance in aid of the Music Festival on Easter Sunday from 8.00pm at The Windjammer Inn, Victoria Road.

There will be no charge, but there will be collection tins for people to show their appreciation, and above all support our Festival!

Dart Music Festival committee would like to say a very big thank you to the Porter Family for their continued and generous support.

THE PORTER FAMILY - Fundraising performance at the Windjammer Inn on Sunday March 31st from 8.00pm.

10th, 11th & 12th May 2013

Dart Music Festival programmes now on sale!

They're here! The official Dart Music Festival programme is now on sale from the following local outlets: Dartmouth Tourist Information Centre, The Royal Castle Hotel, The Flavel, Pillars Newsagents, Dartmouth Yacht Club, Kingswear Post Office, and The Compass Office Shop.

We've managed to hold the price at just £3.00 again this year despite the ever-rising costs involved for putting on the Festival, and every penny of the programme sales goes towards the event.

We know it's been said before, but we really cannot stress enough that this income is absolutely vital for the continuation of the Festival and we'd like to give a very big thank you to everyone who supports us in this way - couldn't do it without you.

This year, to make life easier for our supporters, we have prepared a more printer-friendly and user-friendly version of the downloadable programme (available from the website very shortly) - it's a condensed version of the main programme with a handy day-by-day planner to make sure you don't miss out on anything and to help you get the best out of your Festival weekend.

To order your programme please go to the website - then you can just sit back, relax and start to plan your weekend!

We look forward to welcoming you to our Festival on 10th, 11th & 12th May.

Dart Music Festival Programme - coming shortly...

Good news - the Dart Music Festival Programme has been designed, compiled, checked, edited, checked again, edited again, and been proof-read to within an inch of its life...

It's now been sent off to those nice people at the printers and is being produced as I type - should be ready in time for Easter and rumour has it that people cannot wait to get their hands on it (can't say I blame them - it looks pretty impressive if we do say so ourselves).

It will be on sale from the website or at local outlets, or a new, improved printer-friendly 'Planner' version will be available to download from the website.

Ready any day now so - watch this space.....

Hooray for The Harry Browns!

The Harry Browns are back - and we love them!

They are regarded as the premier shanty and maritime music group in the Bristol and West of England area, and this is what they have to tell us:

We have been singing together now for almost twenty years but can be originally traced back to the early 1970s when our two founder members sang on the dockside near The Nova PH.  We take our name from the sand dredger which was built in Bristol and worked the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel in the 1960s.

We sing both traditional and contemporary songs, some of which we write and arrange ourselves and have appeared at many festivals, events and folk clubs throughout the UK and Europe.  We have recorded four CDs which are available to purchase along with some early days audio tapes. We like to place an emphasis on songs from the West Country and Bristol in particular. We seek to keep alive the memory and traditions of the sea-faring people of Bristol.

The Harrys, as we are affectionately known on the circuit, enjoy singing and sharing that enjoyment with anyone who chooses to listen and/or sing along.Although shanties were work songs and originally only sung on board ship, we believe that these days they are best enjoyed when sung by everyone - Harrys and audience alike.

On our web site you will find out more about us - please visit:

Heg and the Wolf Chorus

Heg and the Wolf Chorus

Heg & The Wolf Chorus are an exciting blend of folk and dramatic pop, using theatrical drums, viola, frenetic piano and a rich wash of vocal harmonies to tell stories.

Last year the band supported BBC Sound of 2013 winners HAIM and received recognition and airplay from BBC Introducing for their EP Cinder.

This year the band are already making their mark with glowing reviews for their latest release "Boat and I" which Folk Words Magazine describes as "A perfect intro to the uniqueness offered by Heg & The Wolf Chorus."

Watch out for their BBC Introducing Session, broadcast on BBC Radio Bristol in March.

The band tell us that they are very excited to be playing at the Festival - and we are very excited about seeing them here!

The Book Shop Band at Dart Music Festival

The Bookshop Band
And now for something completely different - er, read all about it...

We are delighted to welcome The Book Shop Band to the Festival, who will be entertaining us in Dartmouth Library.

Formed in late September 2010, The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books, and play them in bookshops.

Most of the songs come from when their local bookshop in Bath, Mr B's Emporium Of Reading Delights, hosts an author evening. The band read the book and write two songs inspired by it, to be performed at the start of the evening - with the author in the audience.

After the first year of events they had recorded four albums, and quietly released a boxed set with them all in. Supported by VINTAGE BOOKS the band went on a tour of independent bookshops around the UK in 2012, also coinciding with Independent Bookseller’s Week

Over this period they have been featured on 6Music / The Today Program / Front Row / BBC 1 News / The Guardian among others.

During 2012 the band have written a further three albums and hope to record them for release in early 2013. For a complete list of books that have inspired the band and to read comments by authors, publishers, bookshops and the general public, please visit their website.
The Band are looking forward to meeting us as much as we are looking forward to meeting them, and tell us:

"Our latest news is that we've just come out of Realworld Studios where we've recorded our next two albums (due for release in 2013), and we're embarking on a UK wide tour, as well as Ireland and Paris, playing in independent bookshops"

Sounds pretty good, doesn't it? We can't wait...

ESPERANTO

Esperanto
Spanish guitar duo Esperanto make a welcome return to the Dart Music Festival, as part of a series of dates across the South West marking the release of their debut CD, Ida y Vuelta.

Following a chance meeting on an international flamenco forum in 2004, guitarists Jon Boyes and Mark Barnwell have been collaborating ever since, snatching the opportunity to play a handful of live performances each year in between their own busy schedules as soloists.

Literally 'there and back again', Ida y Vuelta is the phrase the Andalucians use to describe the flamenco styles that bear the hallmark of Latin American influences - a synthesis of Spanish and Hispanic rhythm and harmony.

A fitting title then to reflect the duo's brand of guitar music which blends  Latin American and flamenco styles, as well as betraying Mark and Jon's early rock influences.

Esperanto present a showcase of traditional melodies whilst putting their own unique stamp on mainstream music made famous by household names such as the Eagles and Madonna.

Infectious rhythms interlaced with sparkling harmonies and dazzling fretwork, Esperanto take us on a journey; to the sun-kissed beaches of Southern Spain, to the Americas...and back again.

DMF Sponsors 2013 ...

Dart Marina Hotel & Spa:

It is always good to attract local business sponsors for the festival. Some of them have been great supporters over many years and have really helped keep the event going.
One such is local hotel The Dart Marina Hotel & Spa. Not only do they become one of our great venues, putting on live music year after year, they insist on donating money.

We went to visit General Manager Paul Downing recently to discuss this years festival. Cheerful as ever, Paul showed us the new extended dining room area and we discussed what music would be suitable this year.
When asked how the DMF committee could help ensure the Hotel got as much out of the sponsorship of our festival this is what Paul told us. "We regard the Dart Music Festival as one of the most important events that attract people to visit this town each year. It is therefore essential that we do our best to ensure our support so that the festival can continue to draw people to Dartmouth. Even if the Hotel did not get any direct benefit we would still regard it as necessary to continue supporting Dart Music Festival, and we love it anyway!"

We are lucky to have a number of major sponsors who feel exactly the same. They don't look for a huge business benefit from being associated with the DMF but they understand how important it is in making Dartmouth such a wonderful place to live in or visit. We are grateful. We feel that the public should know that this is the situation.

On our website, there is a list of sponsors big and small.  And at the top of every page is a list of our major sponsors with links to their websites in most cases. Please support these companies wherever you can, they deserve your business because they help keep the music going!
