By George - what a Spicy Sunday

Our thanks to Ruth Coe for hosting a delicious curry lunch at The George Inn, Blackawton last Sunday.   Guest Chef Phil Braakenburg spent days lovingly preparing a host of hot and spicy (and in some cases 'blow your head off'!) pickles, chutneys and side dishes to accompany his lovely lamb kebabs, awesome aubergine curry and luscious lamb curry.

Phil was ably and amicably aided and abetted by 'Sous-Chef' Shahar from The Spice Bazaar, Kitchen Porter Rob Lyon and Chief Naan-Baker Pam Braakenburg to provide a brilliant meal in a great location. The sun shone on the George's fab new terrace, the view was amazing, the plates were licked clean, and a good time was had by all.

Our thanks to Phil who kindly donated the proceeds and to Ruth who matched his donation to give £260 to the Dart Music Festival - it is very much appreciated.

Thanks also to Shahar, Rob, Pam and the staff at the George Inn for making it such a relaxing and fun day.

News from The Becca Langsford Band

The Becca Langsford Band featuring Thomas Ford

We've just received this very interesting information on The Becca Langsford Band
from Vince Lee - guitarist/vocalist in the band. Please read on...

My name is Vince Lee, I am guitarist/vocalist with The Becca Langsford Band. I've played The Dart Music Festival several times before with my own band, Vince Lee & The Big Combo. This year I'll be appearing alongside Becca for two shows - and for the evening show the line-up will include Becca's brother, Thomas Ford on harmonica.

Becca's album 'Big Surprise' was released nearly a year ago now. The disc has since been awarded 'Best Blues Album of 2011' by Ashwyn Smith from Digital Blues Radio in a recent interview with Blues in Britain magazine... Tim Aves radio show 'The Blues is Back' for Saint FM. made 'Big Surprise' his number one album of 2011 & Grahame Rhodes from Blues in The Northwest also put Becca's album in his top 10 blues albums of the year.

The band's current line-up features: Myself, Vince Lee from The Big Combo & The Wildcards on guitar, I am joined by Wildcards bandmate Martin Vowles who has swapped his usual guitar duties for double bass and the band's latest addition Chris Wilkinson on drums, another musician better known for his skills as a guitarist with The Bonneville Barons, Lynette Morgan & The Zazou Cowboys.

There is a strong retro vibe to the band's sound which compliments Becca's vintage vocal style perfectly. The songs cover many early blues classics from the likes of Bessie Smith, Charley Patton, Dinah Washington, Ethel Waters & Ruth Brown.

The band will be making their first European appearance this Summer at Pori Jazz Festival
in Finland. For more information please visit www.beccalangsford.com

Vince Lee

Thanks very much Vince  - we're very much looking forward to enjoying the band's performances and also welcoming back Thomas Ford after his amazing last minute concert in the Guildhall last year.

Full details of dates, times and venues will be in the official programme, which is being printed right now and should be available very soon.

Help!! We need Volunteers - we need YOU...!

In the words of the immortal Lennon and McCartney:

Help! We need somebody...
Help!! Not just anybody...
Help!!! You know we need someone...

He-e-elp!!!!

OK, we may have mentioned this before but we really do need extra help during the Festival as there simply aren't enough of us to go round. There are a thousand and one little (and occasionally large) things for us to do from the start of the Festival and sadly we can't be in two places at once - we're only human...

We'll need help with collecting, performers' car parking, 'runners' to  flit between venues, putting out and clearing away chairs, helping at venues, clearing up rubbish and much much more.

If you are interested in joining our happy band of volunteers please contact Alan (Vice Chairman) on 07920 053580 and he'll put you in touch with the right Committee member, or if you can't get hold of him just speak to any Committee member I'm sure you'll be welcomed with open arms.

I know it's been said before but we really do appreciate our lovely volunteers so if you'd like to be involved (and help save our sanity!) please let us know.

To those of you already on our volunteer team, a
very big  thank you
for all you do - we really couldn't do it without you! We look forward to working with you - and hopefully some new recruits - this year.

P.S. Do you think I may have been a bit too subtle in getting this message across...?

It's those lovely tuneful Welshmen again...

A few words from the Choir - so looking forward to hearing those 'heavenly voices' again...

"The choir is delighted to be appearing for the third time at the Dart Music Festival having first made the trip in 2009. We always have a wonderful time in this beautiful part of the world and, most of all, we enjoy performing to new and appreciative audiences.

We have a very busy year ahead culminating at the Royal Albert Hall in October when we shall be joining forces with 14 choirs from around the country for the London Welsh Festival of Male Choirs, quite an experience. We hope that you enjoy our contributions today and thank the Festival Committee for allowing us to participate once again"

It's our pleasure..!

Welcome back Hamilton

A very warm welcome back to Hamilton Loomis - it will be so great to see him here again, especially as he told us last year that his concert in Dartmouth was the best gig of his tour! We went all bashful, and we still have a little warm glow when we remember his fantastic music and kind words...thank you Hamilton.

So many great reviews - so little room to print them all, so if you want to learn more about this very talented young musician who excels at blues, modern funk and slick soul, please visit his website and read all the glowing testimonials - then come and enjoy Hamilton's concert on the last day of the Festival.

Full details of times, venues etc will be in  our programme which should be printed within the next week - please make sure you don't miss this popular artist.

Moor Reason to be happy

The guest blogs are coming thick and fast now! This latest one is from MoorReason - please read on...

We are delighted to be a part of such a fantastic music festival.  It will be our first time at Dartmouth and we are really looking forward to performing.  MoorReason were formed just over two years ago by Lee and Yvonne Coatham and all the band members are local to Dartmoor, hence the band name.  Since forming the band have been going from strength to strength, gigging regularly, appearing on radio, recording an EP and have been confirmed to headline the Friday Night Sessions at Lapstock Music Festival in June.
We have a growing repertoire of original songs and have included some new original songs and some covers especially for Dartmouth.  The band's current line up is Yvonne on lead vocals, Lee on guitar, Paul on bass, Dick on drums and Liz on flute.

We really hope we can entertain the audience at Dartmouth and look forward to meeting some great people and fellow musicians.

Confused? So are Belshazzar's Feast...

Please see below the hilarious blog that Belshazzar's Feast  have come up with for us, which their agent Terry tells me they've pulled off in the middle of a really hectic schedule.

 BELSHAZZAR'S FEAST

Belshazzar's Feast are confused, even more so than usual. For over 15 years, we have played our idiosyncratic, some might say idiotic brand of traditional English music, both songs and dance tunes, blended almost seamlessly with Baroque hits, TV themes, and wrong notes. Our varied and colourful itinerary has taken us from back rooms of pubs to deserted bandstands, crumbling sports pavilions to damp working men’s clubs (for damp working men), as far afield as the US, Wales and Belgium. We like to think of ourselves as professional, consummate artistes with a wealth of experience between us, some of it even musical. We have an enormous industry mechanism supporting us - agent, publicist, web designer, hairdressers, vineyards, Ginsters . . .

Needless to say, our hectic schedule leaves little time for physical recreation and exercise, let alone team sports, although this may be belied by our appearance (that being said, we do listen to the cricket on long journeys, which can leave us both sweating and breathless). Imagine, then, our surprise and consternation on being told by our agent that we would be travelling, this May, to a beautiful seaside town in the West Country, as opposed to the usual dingy post-industrial towns in the West Midlands, not to entertain and edify our esoteric public with rare and choice musical delicacies, not to transport the cognoscenti to sonic worlds of ecstasy and rapture, but to take part, for a fee, in a high-profile sporting/music fusion event.

How has the booking arisen? Is this a case of confused identities?  Might Paul S have been mistaken for a young Eric Bristow, or Paul H for an old Andy Fordham? How on earth can we possibly hold arrows in one hand and a pint in the other, whilst playing our various instruments and executing our sophisticated choreography? Like all New Men, we are in touch with our feminine sides, but multi-tasking to that extent defies imagination.  And where will this synthesis of games and arts lead – The Ragtime at Rugby, Stoke Poker and Folk Festival, Poetry and Pool in Poole?

As I have said, we are true and conscientious professionals, so despite our trepidatious misgivings, we will rise to the challenge of this novel, if unexpected challenge, in an endeavour to do our duty to our loyal, paying and CD-buying public. Until the Dart Music Festival, expect to see us in training, building up our stamina and honing our skills, balancing beers on our bellies and shooting for bulls-eye, at a pub near you.

Moscow Drug Club are coming back...

 MOSCOW DRUG CLUB
Great news... Moscow Drug Club - who delighted us all in the Guildhall at last year's Festival - are back, and blogging! Many thanks to Katya of the Moscow Drug Club for this Guest Blogger piece:
Moscow Drug Club....
Is a curious musical place where certain elements of 1930’s Berlin Cabaret, Hot Club de France, Nuevo Tango & Gypsy Campfire meet, have a few to drink and stagger arm in arm into the darkness of some eastern European cobbled street on a mission to find the bar where Django Reinhardt & Tom Waits are having an after hours jam with the local Tziganes.
Combining their original material with songs by the likes of Jaques Brel, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits & Bertolt Brecht, Moscow Drug Club provide an intoxicating & intimate musical experience.
You are cordially invited to share a wry smile with us as you enter the darkly comic world of Moscow Drug Club…..this way please & mind the stairs!

Meet our Guest Bloggers - 'The Organisation'

We thought it would be a great idea to invite some of our performers to be Guest Bloggers so we can all get to know them a bit. Here is our first G.B. - Taraneh Meen from 'The Organisation'.

We are really looking forward to welcoming them to the DMF and seeing them play - aren't you..? Here's what Taraneh has to say:

THE ORGANISATION

The Organisation has been playing the Dartmouth Music Festival for some years now.  The band now has a real Hammond organ to show off, and we lovingly carry it everywhere measuring doorways ahead of time!  The only band of its kind in the southwest, The Organisation plays a mixture of 60s and 70s pop songs and soul.  Paul Harris on Hammond organ, George Comer on sax, Clive Hooper on guitar, Dennis Harris on drums, Mark Flack on bass and Taraneh Meen on lead vocals.  There's no-one else doing what we're doing.

Come down to Al Fresco's and get a front row seat and some excellent food.  Thanks and see you in May!

EEEK! It's gaining on us...

Only thirty six more days to the Festival - EEEK! We (the DMF team) had our penultimate committee meeting last night and realised that the Festival is gaining on us. 'Never has so much been done for so many by so few' as the saying goes, and there is still plenty to do between now and May 11th to ensure all goes smoothly but we're getting there. The programme is being printed as I write and with any luck it may be ready by Easter - we're keeping our fingers, toes and everything else crossed but if not it should be out by the end of next week at the very latest.

Our merchandise ladies - Melanie and Kim - have been busy organising this year's goodies and the new T shirts are just about to be printed with some different styles and colours so we're all quite excited about that and can't wait to see them. Keep an eye open for more details here in a few weeks.

Sue Higgs, our Collections Co-ordinator, has ordered the collection tins and is planning to meet with our fantastic team of volunteer collectors later this month. Which brings me to the next point - we are always grateful for extra help during the festival as there simply aren't enough of us to go round! We'll need help with collecting, performers' car parking, 'runners' to  flit between venues, putting out and clearing away chairs, clearing up rubbish and much much more. If you are interested please contact Alan (Vice Chairman) on 07920 053580 and he'll point you in the right direction. I know it's been said before but we really couldn't do it without our lovely volunteers so if you'd like to be involved (and help save our sanity!) please let us know.

Last but definitely not least, if you are on our list of performers and would like to be a guest blogger we'd love to hear from you - just let us know by putting a comment on the blog so I can contact you, and I'll do my best to help.

Well, much as I'd love to stay and chat I have to go now - got to get those meeting minutes typed up pronto so I'll sign off here but will be back with more news very soon. Enjoy the sunshine...
