Decks@Ivy Lane - Dart Music Festival's Youth Venue

Decks@Ivy Lane – Dart Music Festival’s Youth Venue
DMF Committee member Ben Malley, who is running a sound engineering workshop at Ivy Lane during the Festival, says:

“Dart Music Festival is expanding its opportunities for participation this year and taking advantage of a surprisingly underused and under-appreciated town asset.

Situated just behind the Seale Arms, The Decks Youth Centre has been somewhat neglected in the passing years - despite its potential as a successful venue, practice space or general youth support centre.

It has also recently come under the possibility of closure from Devon County Council due to budget cuts - so the more support and interest in this space people can exhibit, the better.

During the Festival, there will be a variety of workshops and performances spanning the Saturday and Sunday, catering for every age, musical preference and level of ability.

On the Saturday, I shall be running a workshop based around the 'alternative' careers and styles the music industry has to offer.

Music festivals have plenty of opportunities for performers to showcase their skills and material, but the importance of roles such as sound engineers, electronic artists, producers etc. are often overlooked or misunderstood.

I shall be exploring and showcasing these different careers and performance techniques whilst offering insight into what skills and equipment are needed to start.

Other workshops include the Totnes School of Rock with Terence Waldstadt, which offers the opportunity to learn and perform classic rock songs alongside like- minded musicians.

Totnes’ Jamming Station will also be doing  workshops to invite aspiring young musicians who sing or play bass, drums or guitar to join them for a jamming session.

As well as the workshops, the Decks Youth Centre will also play host to performances. Kicking off proceedings on the Saturday afternoon is ‘Dartmouth’s Got Talent’ - a talent show where all performers are welcome - and on Sunday after the morning workshops there will be performances ranging from DJs, live bands including ‘Insonify’, and acoustic acts.

All equipment is provided from drum kits to PA system – and the Centre is even offering  free pizza at the lunch break!”

Calling all volunteers - Dart Music Festival needs you...

It's that time of year again...

With less than three weeks to go now we are gearing up to organise our happy band of volunteers.

You know who you are - please believe me when I say that we simply couldn't do it without you..!

New collectors are always welcomed to join our happy band, as we aim to cover all events and venues. The more the merrier!

Sue Higgs - the lovely lady who co-ordinates the volunteers, has asked me to convey this message:

"Once again this year a request has gone out to all of our collectors past/present/in waiting, asking everyone to let me know where they would like to collect.

This year however, I have asked everyone to select something else that they would not normally choose to see. After all it is all 'free' - so what better opportunity than to try something new?

I say 'free' but of course we know that without the support of our trusted collectors we would be unable to stage the Festival. So the plea goes out once again to all those willing to rattle a tin whilst enjoying the music.

If you are able to offer an hour or so over the weekend please contact Sue Higgs on 07974 390198 or email soohiggs@hotmail.co.uk

We look forward to hearing from you!!"

What more can I possibly add to Sue's words except to say why not come along and give it a try?

You might enjoy it - and it will surely give you a little warm glow to know that you have been a part of making our fabulous Festival a huge success.

Contact Sue if you are interested in getting involved.

Ash Mandrake's back at Dart Music Festival..!

The Ash Mandrake Act incorporates music, loop machines, stories and comedy.

He designed the double necked guitar, hats and costumes.

This is folk rock, but many styles are used.

Ash has been described as imaginative; an incredibly skilled musician and songwriter; unique, brave, and completely naturalistic.

Please visit his website http://ashmandrake.com/ for an impressive collection of quotes and reviews - and here are a few to be going on with:

“The feral folk phenomenon Ash Mandrake - singer-songwriter, guitarist and distinctive performer who plants roots music firmly back into the earth” -  David Metcalf: Bath Story Telling Circle

"A good eccentric is hard to find and in a medium where many acts can sound the same, here’s one act that trumps so many in terms of stage presence, image and musical ability. With mutant instruments in his possession, he will take you on a ride that no amount of Frank Zappa will prepare you for! Grasp it tight, it’s Ash Mandrake!" -  Brewtown Music 2013

"You’ve never seen anything like it. You’ll never forget it. You’ll never be the same again.” -  Roger Nuttal: Folk At The Oak, Bishop’s Cleve

Can you afford to miss the Feral Folk Phenomenon..??

New stage for this year's Dart Music Festival

We're ever so excited!

Earlier on today, we had a dry run in the Royal Avenue Gardens to make sure the new stage we are hiring - for the first time in seventeen years of running the Festival - would fit.

I am pleased to report that the trial  was a big success and the Committee is delighted and more than a little relieved - our thanks to the lovely people at Stagerent for coming all the way from Barnstaple to help put our minds at rest.

The stage sits ever so neatly in front of the Bandstand - almost like it grew there - and promises to be bigger, better and most importantly so much less seriously hard work for DMF President Rob Lyon’s Trusty Team, who should be thanked for their superhuman stage-building efforts over the last sixteen years.

The stage will be delivered and erected on the day before the Festival, whereas in previous years the stage building started virtually at daybreak on the Monday before. An enormous amount of hard labour went on -  shifting and carrying, hammering and screwing, climbing and dodging (the odd scaffolding pole), cursing and swearing, etc etc -  for the next four days, leaving said Trusty Team almost too exhausted by Friday to enjoy the music...

It's not that we didn't love our old stage - we did - but we think this option is going to be so much better all round. There will be lots of room on the stage and also lots of display space for the Sponsors' Banners along the front – in fact the banners are being prepared as I write – and we are sure that everyone will agree that the new stage will be of great benefit to the Festival.

We’ve also decided to re-position the Merchandise Tent to the front of the gardens this year to make it easier for people to browse through the stunning array of DMF goodies – we hope you’ll be surprised and delighted with what we’ll have on offer - in fact I'll be sure to post some photos on the blog as soon as I have some, just to whet your appetites...

Just three weeks to go now, and the sun is shining. See you there - can't wait!

The Anita Skoogh Quartet at Dart Music Festival

The Annika Skoogh Quartet

Born in South America and raised in Sweden, Annika is an adventurous jazz singer exploring standards and contemporary tunes through alternate time signatures, reharmonisations and a modern aesthetic.

Annika is accompanied by the young and talented Matt Carter on keys, the dynamic Marcus Vergette on double bass and brilliantly distinctive and assured Coach York on drums.

Expect tasteful re-workings, effortless improvisation and tight rhythms delivered with passion and high energy, The Annika Skoogh Quartet are not to be missed!

Fran Montignani Rees MSc, Presenter Phonic FM & Voice Specialist 2013, says:

"Having seen Annika Skoogh and her Quartet, I am relieved that seriously good talent still exists. Her rich, lustrous & heartfelt vocals reminded me of a dancer who can leap and twist to any height or position with precision, grace and ease. Added to that, a brilliant band that has everything and who perfectly compliment her voice"

Jake Friese-Greene at Dart Music Festival

Jake Friese-Greene is just one of the performers appearing at this years' Festival supported by and involved with The Jamming Station in Totnes, which provides a weekly platform for emerging sound artists aged between 13 - 21 to meet, collaborate and gig.

It is an opportunity to network, write and co-write, arrange, and develop confidence in writing and performance skills whilst still working towards plugged and unplugged gigs.

Jake plays a sort of souped-up, modernised version of British folk-rock lying somewhere between Mumford & Sons and Bombay Bicycle Club, and has been described as a 'unique and ambitious' artist from the burrows of Totnes.

At only 19 years of age, Jake has already released his deput 'Those Days EP', as well as making his own little mark in the Devon music scene.

Since normally playing gigs on his own in small pubs and clubs, Jake has managed to find his band and continues to develop a bigger and louder sound for the best live performance possible.

Jake Friese-Greene has promise, and oodles of potential. He’s an artist who’s been around for almost no time at all, but has managed to find his own voice, which is no small feat. If he can continue to refine and expand his sound, he could seriously be a force to be reckoned with.

For full details of Jake Friese-Greene's performance, please check your DMF Programme

Ji Liu's Debut Album a Huge Success..!

Ji Liu

We've just heard that classical pianist Ji Liu's debut album 'Piano Reflections' is proving to be a huge hit - in fact we have it on good authority that the enormous success of the Classic FM CD has completely taken him by surprise!

The album was No.1 in the charts for several weeks and was also John Suchet’s Album of the Week in January. For more information, please read on...

RZWESKI: Winnsboro Cotton Mill Blues from North American Ballads   8’

BEETHOVEN: Sonata in C sharp minor, Op.27 No.2 Moonlight   15’

-          Adagio sostenuto

-          Allegretto

-          Presto agitato

GERSHWIN/EARL WILD: 3 Virtuoso Etudes: Man I Love, Embraceable You and I Got Rhythm  7’

BUSONI: Sonatina No.6 Carmen Fantasy   10’

SAINT-SAENS: Danse macabre   8’

The Beethoven Moonlight Sonata and the Saint-Saëns Danse Macabre are both on his Classic FM CD, and the opening work remains the same. Here is the link http://www.classicfm.com/artists/ji-liu/album-reviews/piano-reflections/

Reviews:

'There was much to impress in Ji Liu’s fearless glissandos and a saturnine lyricism that attracted supernatural suggestion…. Ji Liu remained as cool as a cucumber as his fingers played with fire….this was a fine performance of a masterpiece and established Ji Liu as one to watch.' -
www.classicalsource.com / Queen Elizabeth Hall / Liszt’s Totentanz / January 2014

'Ji Liu displayed an amazing sum of talent and maturity for his seemingly young age.  Ji belongs to this breed of pianists that need not to put up a flamboyant physical show to distract the audience. Solely hands were at work to let the music do the talking.' -
www.performancereviewed.com / Barbican / Rachmaninov No.2 / February 2014

'It was fitting that the concert series went out on a high with a recital by pianist Ji Liu.  With a mixed programme of well-known piano standards and a few lesser known works he demonstrated skills beyond his 22 years….he performed with extraordinary concentration and understanding.' -
This is South Wales / Gower Festival / July 2013

'Ji Liu, had his audience experiencing a whole range of emotions….The Beethoven ‘Moonlight’, Chopin Nocturnes and the Prokofiev Sonata No.7 were all despatched with consummate control.' -
*****The latest.co.uk / Brighton Festival / May 2013

'In Rhapsody in Blue….pianist Ji Liu finds comedy and tenderness.'-
Gramophone / Royal Academy of Music RAM042 / September 2012

Personally, we can't believe our luck in having such a talented young man play for us this year!

Jess Vincent at Dart Music Festival

Jess Vincent is a captivating performer delivering her extraordinary songs with subtle arrangements and a maturity that belies her youth, yet allows her vulnerability to shine through

Accompanying herself on guitar, baritone uke and shruti box, her unique and gorgeous voice has been compared to many, such as Kate Bush, Iris Dement and Maria Muldaur - but is so distinctive that it could only be JESS VINCENT..!

She will be performing with Marcel Rose accompanying her.

For more info:

People in Dartmouth are already whistling 'Fetch My Heart' from her latest album Seesaw Dreams!

What people say:

"Jess Vincent is a name that should become as familiar on the lips as the wind is upon the trees” - Fatea Records

“When Jess sings, her belief and passion shines through her voice.” - Terry Ferdinand, Bishop FM

“Beauty throughout, I love everything about this!” - Peter Grogan, Dublin City FM

A four-piece skiffle/bluegrass/country and nonsense band from Bristol.

Between the four of us, we cover banjo, guitar, dobro, harmonica, double bass and snare drum and have great fun at the same time.

We made our Dartmouth debut at last year's festival and thoroughly enjoyed it - playing the Market Square in the day on Saturday followed by a slot at the Guildhall in the evening which will be repeated this year.

We draw our set list from bands like Old Crow Medicine Show, The Dodge Brothers, Ralph Stanley, Johnny Cash and Reverend Horton Heat and put our own slant on some well known songs.

Workshops, workshops and more workshops - at Dart Music Festival.

2014 must surely be the Year of the Workshop for Dart Music Festival - please read on for some of the delights in store for you...

This year’s Festival is positively awash (well, we are on the banks of the wonderful river Dart...) with workshops for all ages from the very young to the not-so-very young…

For the Under 5’s, there is ‘Music With Mummy’ with Carol Holbrow – a lively, fun and active session of music and singing, jumping and  marching, shaking and drumming for young toddlers and children up to age five, although younger and older siblings will be very welcome.

Only fifteen spaces available so book your advance ticket from the Flavel on 01803 839530.

Wren Music are hosting a Scratch Band Family Workshop at the Guildhall where you can learn about different instruments and how to play them, to put together a piece of music as a band with everyone playing. Lots of instruments will be provided, or you can bring along your own – no experience necessary! Twenty participants maximum.

Professional percussionist Martin Neil, who runs the ‘Voices from the Nations’ charity which rediscovers indigenous sounds and promotes their music worldwide to raise funds for impoverished tribes,  is running a Drum Workshop in the Flavel Church. Martin and friends will perform an evening concert – which may well involve people from the afternoon workshop!

We are delighted to welcome back Ash Mandrake with his Family Workshop which proved so popular last year, where you can sing in rounds, use a microphone – and above all have some fun! You’ll also be able to use a loop machine in small groups or individually, to enjoy yourself by experimenting with different sounds. Suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied by a well-behaved adult…

Denis Kigongo
More drumming – this time from Denis Kigongo with his African Djembe Drumming in the Flavel. The emphasis is very much ‘hands on’ in learning to play djembes and different African drums and percussion instruments, with everyone able to participate irrespective of their musical background. Maximum participants twenty five, but plenty of room to sit and watch.

Devonly Voices choir leader Vicky Hadland is holding her ever-popular Singing Workshop in the Flavel Church – no need to read music or sing solo, just come along to this friendly and informal workshop and simply have fun singing in glorious harmony! No singing experience necessary – singers and non-singers welcome.

Stephen Warbeck’s Workshop with the Pupils of Dartmouth Academy - Oscar-winning composer Stephen and his ensemble will help students create music to accompany their previously-made short films, which will then be screened the following day with a live performance at the Flavel.
BOTH THE WORKSHOP AND THE SCREENING ARE TOTALLY FUNDED BY THE DART MUSIC FESTIVAL FOUNDATION.
Book your free ticket - for the Flavel performance ONLY - in advance on 01803 839530

Uke Can Rock! Join this fun ukulele workshop to learn the basics including chords and rhythms, and to play along in a group to some rock classics from the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple. Ukuleles supplied but spaces limited so arrive early at the Clifton Room to avoid disappointment.

And finally – drums! Experience the fun of Taiko Drumming in these family-friendly short sessions in front of the Bandstand – a great way to experience the joy of playing simple rhythms that look and sound great on these impressive taiko drums first hand. Esme from Exeter, aged 8, says “Taiko is epic and brilliant – it’s fun and I love it!” Don’t just take Esme’s word for it – come along and see for yourself! No experience needed – suitable for ages 6 – 106…

In addition to all this, the Decks@Ivy Lane Youth Venue is also hosting workshops for young people on the Saturday and Sunday of the Festival.

First is a Sound Engineering Workshop with Ben Malley, based around the 'alternative' careers and styles the music industry has to offer. Ben explains that music festivals have plenty of opportunities for performers to showcase their skills and material, but the importance of roles such as sound engineers, electronic artists, producers etc. are often overlooked or misunderstood. He’ll be exploring and showcasing these different careers and performance techniques whilst offering insight into what skills and equipment are needed to start.

Then comes a Rock Band Workshop from the Totnes School of Rock, where you can join in on an exciting rock experience with Terence Waldstadt and learn what it takes to play classic rock songs, including the importance of dynamics, instrumentation, timing, rhythm, tempo and improvisation. Acquire the trade secrets of how to make a song sound great from a professional musician with over fifteen years’ experience!

Last but definitely not least is a session with Jamming Station from Totnes. If you sing or play bass, drums or guitar then join a jam session with Jamming Station – a collective of young musicians aged 13 – 19 who meet weekly to jam, write and gig. Suitable for all levels.

The Christian Garrick Quartet at Dart Music Festival

'BEGINNING WITH BACH'...

Christian Garrick
The Christian Garrick Quartet:

Christian Garrick - 4, 5 and 7 string violins
David Gordon - piano and
Paul Moylan - double bass
Tom Hooper - drums and percussion

Following in a long and respectful tradition of jazz musicians gaining inspiration from the music of Bach, the Christian Garrick Quartet takes a wry and light-hearted look at his music in 'Beginning With Bach'.

When pondering Bach combined with jazz, one recalls the legendary Jacques Loussier Plays Bach Trio for whom the quartet once had the honour of opening a concert at Chichester Cathedral. The CGQ created a Bach-styled programme of their own especially for 2013's Bach Unwrapped Festival held at London's King's Place and, following this success, are now touring the show nationwide.

Included in the programme are original jazz compositions based on Bach's keyboard preludes, irresistible arrangements of some of his compositions, and Bach-based music from such luminaries as George Shearing and Chucho Valdés.

Texas Tunesmith 'Suitcase' Slim Semora comes to Dart Music Festival

Slim Semora, aka Suitcase Slim - the one man Texas band - began life in Houston, Texas. From early on he found he was a natural tunesmith, and he grew up listening to the likes of ZZ Top, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Robert Johnson, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and more.

Slim’s Southern roots have always been apparent in his music style which today has morphed into a unique blend of Americana with country blues, rockabilly and folk rock influences.

Semora is an accomplished musician with time in the saddle, having spent his youth touring the States in various bands as well as owning recording studios in Austin, Houston and Wichita. More recently he landed on our shores where he resides in Devon with his lovely wife, Jayne

He performs using acoustic guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, foot tambourine and a beaten up old suitcase with bass drum - a melodic, finger picking style with gutsy rhythm.

At the Looe Music Festival he was quoted as being 'like a band, but just one man!', and  Wilko Johnson recently said “That’s what I like”!

Now touring the UK with his new CD 'Volumes of One' and with more radio shows and festivals underway, 2014 is looking to be a very good year for Slim!

Go to: www.suitcaseslim.com or www.slimsemora.com to hear more….

Slim will be performing live at the Dart Music Festival so come and enjoy some sounds from Texas!
