Strictly was “Stupendous and Simply Stunning” say guests…
Our first fundraiser of the season – Strictly Come Dancing – was back on November 22nd by popular demand after a break of a year…so don’t say we never listen to public requests!
The DMF team swung into action early on the Saturday morning to organise, trim, fettle and generally spruce up the Guildhall with a snazzy pink and black theme in readiness for the evening’s event – and though we do say so ourselves we really did think the Old Girl scrubbed up very well and looked fantastic on the night. Hardly surprising really – it’s at events like this that the Hall really comes into its own. Well after all, this is what it is meant for, with its proscenium arch, sprung dance floor and all, and we had many comments throughout the evening about what a great venue it is.
The
BRNC Volunteer Big Band - aided by the Lovely Lucy on vocals - really did us proud and entertained the happy guests with superb music throughout the evening, and not just for the competing dancers.
Ah – the dancers… weren’t they just great? The standard of dancing was very high and what’s more they all looked like they were enjoying themselves!
We were treated to wonderful waltzes from Rose and Sean Pound and Christine and David Brooker, a brilliant cha-cha from Nick Debney and partner and a very lively jive from Keith Williams and Yvonne Cottam. With talent like this not only the audience, all togged up as requested in their best black and white finery, but the judges – Julie Moores, Rob Bird, Phil Braakenburg and Martin Judd (AKA Darcy, Bruno, Craig and Len), aided and abetted by compere Nick Crosley– had a job on their hands to decide upon the winners, but Keith and Yvonne just had the edge and were awarded the Glitterball Trophy by Mayor Rob Lyon.
The fun, music and free dancing continued for the rest of the evening enhanced by the cheeseboard supper and not, of course, forgetting the bar, and our thanks go to
Bays Brewery and
Dartmouth Wine Co for the liquid refreshments and
Sainsbury’s,
Smith St Deli,
Dart to Mouth Deli and the
Deli in Dartmouth for their generous donations of some delicious and varied cheeses.
Sue Higgs organised one of her very smart hampers for a raffle prize, and there was also a voucher for a polypin beer (thank you Bays!) and a lovely bottle of champagne, which all helped towards making the evening a huge success.
Even though it took a lot of organising and hard work, the DMF team – resplendent in black dresses and shocking pink feather boas (and that was just the men..!) had a most enjoyable and rewarding evening and the chaps with their pink bow ties looked very fetching too.
I think we can safely say that a good time was had by all, and the icing on the cake is that the event raised over £2,000 - which we reckon is a pretty good start towards the massive amount of money we'll need to raise by May.
Our sincere thanks go to all who helped to make the evening such a
huge success. The thing is – do you want us to do it all again next
year…?? We have a possible date of 21st November 2015 in mind so - watch
