A Plethora of Porters at Dart Music Festival...

The Porters are back...!

We are delighted to welcome back to Dartmouth the very talented Porter Family, who will not only be performing at the event but who have very kindly played at in the Windjammer Inn during the year to help raise funds for the Festival.

The Porters are, from left to right:

Barney, Hannah, Tim, Helen and Beth.

They are all busy doing their own things right now - Tim tells me that Barney now works in the Music and Drama department at Sibford School near Banbury, and plays guitar in Wired who perform at many large functions up and down the country.

Hannah plays in several jazz orientated bands in the Warwickshire area and continues conjuring up quirky illustrations.

Helen teaches piano, and Tim runs music events in Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire including the Banbury Blues & Roots Festival. Tim also tours with various guitarists, and teaches harmonica.

Beth Porter and the Availables

Beth has a new Beth Porter And The Availables album out on vinyl (with download option) - 'Open Doors'. Since the last Festival she has been touring with Newton Faulkner and The Bookshop Band amongst many.

The Availables are Jools Scott on piano. Sue Lord, and Ian Vorley on violin, Emma Hooper on viola, Paul McMahon and Daisy Palmer shared drumming duties, Jeff Spencer and Pete Gibbs on bass.

The album was recorded and mixed at J&J Studios, Bristol. Mastered by Haford Mastering.

The band will be touring the UK as well as performing in-store record shop concerts to promote the album. The vinyl will be available from all good record shops, including Rough Trade, Truck Records, Raves from the Grave, Sound Knowledge, Rise Records, Mr B’s Emporium, Coda, Fopp, Blackwells and HMV.

Tom Mason & The Blue Buccaneers - Dart Music Festival

Credit: Jeff Lange
Tom Mason and the Blue Buccaneers play with the fervour of the Pogues and the sensitivity of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Their songs transport you to the wildest pub in Port Royal at the turn of the eighteenth century.

Tom’s theatricality and musicianship make for an explosive mix. His songs conjure up a life on the seas in an era when the only hope for destitute sailors was to go “on the account”, to become pirates.

The songs on 'The Blue Buccaneer' CD are all new, yet the mastery of the songwriting gives them the feel of classic sea shanties and world-worn ballads. There are rousing sing-along drinking songs, piratical rave-ups, and ballads that bear out the harsh realities of life on the sea. Whatever song you are listening to, the excitement of Tom Mason & the Blue Buccaneers’ live show is apparent - whether it be at a theatre, on a festival stage, at a beach-side tavern, at a rowdy street party, or, of course, on the deck of a brigantine sailing through the Caribbean...!

Credit: M Dobo
Tom Mason has released seven CDs and numerous collaborative CDs, including two by the Big Happy on Western Beat Records and one with Nashville’s Lower Broadway stalwarts Swampgrass.

He has been featured on many compilations, and in addition to being a solo artist and bandleader, Tom has played lead guitar for a multitude of artists.

He  toured the US and Europe with Phil Lee,  played with D.C. favorites Last Train Home, and with Supe Granda of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

As an actor, Tom treads the boards from coast to coast. He’s performed in the National Tour of “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”, and played Clarence in Nashville Shakespeare Festival’s production of “Richard III”.

He has also acted in countless other regional productions, was a guest artist at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center’s Cabaret Conference and is also active in film. He has played many roles including kidnappers, drug dealers, the devil, pirates, and Dolly Parton’s Dobro player in a Lifetime television movie.

“The Blue Buccaneer” CD is a rollicking account of privateer life that brings together the many aspects of Tom Mason’s storied career: singer, songwriter, actor, conjuror, and, yes,a PIRATE!

Their new CD "The World is Ablaze" draws on the fact that pirates sailed the world around and pirate crews were an international lot, so their music would be a medley of styles plundered from all over.

We look forward to hearing Tom and the Boys perform a selection of the songs from it when we welcome them to Dart Music Festival.

Dart Music Festival - Rubbish...!

Blonde Bin-Liner Beauties Hil, Di and Pam

What a load of rubbish...

...just one of the many tasks that our hard-working, barely-eating-or-sleeping Committee members have to tackle during the three hectic days of the Festival.

Here we see three glamourous members of the Best Exotic Marigold Gloves Team doing their bit in the Royal Avenue Gardens.

We have been known to be litter-picking en masse at midnight before now, so at least the sun was shining on the righteous when this pic was taken. Oh yes, they may look happy, but believe me they are crying inside... ;-)

No seriously though Folks, not long now and we can't wait - rubbish collecting and all...

Bring it on!

Kate in the Kettle at Dart Music Festival

"Fearless, intense and rather wonderful"

fRoots Magazine

Kate in the Kettle encompasses a wide range of traditional styles, which Kate Young has  gathered over the years of her learning and musical experiences, and distilled into uniquely crafted instrumental arrangements and new songs, with Scottish folk music traditions at its heart.

Kate was brought up close to Edinburgh playing folk music of the fiddle from an early age, later going on study on Newcastle University’s BMus Folk and Traditional Music degree. It was during that time that she developed her style, furthering her knowledge in Scottish fiddle playing, became part of world-music project ‘Ethno in Transit’, learning a great deal about different folk music traditions whilst touring across Europe and Australia with them.

She also found a way to connect her work as a singer-songwriter with this rich knowledge and ability she had acquired, and began to experiment with ‘fiddle-singing’ – connecting song with the fiddle as both an accompaniment and melodic instrument.

In this group, Kate is joined by Marit FƤlt  from Sweden on LĆ„t-Mandola, and occasionally Victor Solana on tabla and percussion. Together their music depicts a journey of exploration of creativity, of embracing old traditions with new ideas, merging and setting boundaries between each element.

Whilst the music of Kate in the Kettle has the ability to not only look at the past and future traditions, but also what lies within Scottish traditional music and outwards to others – a strong artistic line is found reflecting what it means to be an artist in Scotland in this current cultural climate of worldwide musical interaction.

Kate Young is a Scottish musician and composer. She currently performs alongside Mercury Award-nominee, Eliza Carthy in the all-female fiddle-singers band 'Carthy, Hardy, Farrell and Young' (UK) who released the album 'Laylam' earlier this year.

Kate explores the use of the voice and fiddle playing by blending her knowledge of world traditions and her own compositions and style. She was brought up immersed in the folk music scene in Edinburgh, learning about Scottish traditional music, whilst also composing her own songs with piano, voice and fiddle.

As part of various world-music projects, she has toured across Europe and Australia, performed at festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival. She has composed for string quartets including Mr McFall's Chamber and Northern Sinfonia Quartet and is currently creating a soundtrack for Czech film, 'Montenegro' (EasyFunFilms).

Joe Cribb and the Seed Drills - Blues & Roots at Dart Music Festival

New blues and roots child is born - Joe Cribb and the Seed Drills - ready to make a scream!

This is the new roots blues you’ve been waiting for - edgy and innovative and rooted in rock, soul, punk, Americana and - of course - rock ’n roll...

Formed by Joe Cribb, Spencer Brown and Matt Jones, the group are about to release their long-awaited debut album in early April.

Inspired by legends such as Muddy Waters, Bob Dylan and Sea Sick Steve, and drawing influences from punk-blues artists such as Jack White and garage rock band The Jim Jones Revue; Joe Cribb and the Seed Drills are here to revolutionise the UK blues scene with their very loud sound.

The vocalist and leading man Joe Cribb draws on his real-life sorrows, everyday experiences and observations to write haunting and heart-felt lyrics and fervent sounds. Joe’s intense and riotous voice give the songs a rock ’n roll edge that resonates with his cigar box guitar. (Please see Fascinating Facts below...)

Spencer Brown - bass - and Matt Jones - drums - provide a fierce rhythm section that completes the sound that is the root and foundation of the Seed Drills.

The trio were formed in Bristol and started playing in and around the local area but have been touring the UK and European festivals since early 2014.

Find out more about Joe and the boys...

And find out more about cigar box guitars
(source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigar_box_guitar):

The cigar box guitar is an early American blues instrument. Trace evidence of cigar box instruments exist from 1840 to the 1860s. It would seem that the earliest cigar box instruments would be extremely crude and primitive; however, this is not always the case.

The cigar box guitars and fiddles were also important in the rise of jug bands and blues. As most of these performers were black Americans living in poverty, many could not afford a "real" instrument. Using these, along with the washtub bass (similar to the cigar box guitar), jugs, washboards, and harmonica, black musicians performed blues during socialisations.

The Great Depression of the 1930s saw a resurgence of homemade musical instruments. Times were hard in the American south and for entertainment sitting on the front porch singing away their blues was a popular pastime. Musical instruments were beyond the means of everybody, but an old cigar box, a piece of broom handle and a couple wires from the screen door and a guitar was born.

Beth Porter & The Availables back at Dart Musc Festival

Well-loved and ubiquitous session cello player Beth Porter takes centre stage with her debut album release “Open Doors”.

An award winning classical musician in her own right, Beth embraced the folk scene and was taken in by their fraternity, touring and sessioning with the likes of Eliza Carthy, Jim Moray, Jackie Oates and Bellowhead.

As Beth’s reputation as an outstanding session cellist grew, she was much sought after by more main stream acts, appearing on albums by Newton Faulkner, Kula Shaker, Petula Clark, The Proclaimers and The Heavy.

During this time Beth began writing her own songs and was invited to play a number of her own dates in Germany at very short notice. Ringing friends and musicians to see if they might play last
minute as part of her band, Beth Porter & The Availables was born.

Beth sings her endearing songs with a pure yet fragile voice, accompanying herself on either cello or ukulele, and it is this signature sound that forms the core of the album.

The Availables, on strings, piano, drums and bass, expand the arrangements from the ethereal to the cinematic, epic and playful, delivering an album of undeniable richness, and all lovingly captured in glorious vinyl analogue.

Spending so much time on the road as a musician is a clear inspiration for the songs on this album. Beth captures many a landscape within her lyrics, such as on Pylons where she sings of the reflective moments on a journey that absorb us, as well as more darker personal experiences such as the exquisitely morbid Salty Water, reflecting upon a murder that took place behind her house.

Beth Porter & The Availables will be touring the UK to support the Open Doors album in the Spring 2015. For an updated tour schedule and more information please visit:

Dart Music Festival - The Annika Skoogh Quartet and Duo

We are delighted that the talented Annika Skoogh is performing at Dart Music Festival again this year - first with her Quartet and then in a Duo with Steve Dow. Sounds like she is going to be a busy lady in May - please read on...

The Annika Skoogh Quartet is an exciting band fast gaining a reputation as a force to be reckoned with and led by Swedish singer Annika Skoogh.

Between them, they play many of the jazz circuits and festivals both locally and nationally and we are happy to have them back again at this year’s festival. Their music is an innovative re-working of mainly jazz standards but also pop tunes through alternate time signatures, re-harmonisations and a modern aesthetic and the result is a new fresh sound.

Annika is an adventurous singer who blends an effortless, rhythmical style with a warm soulful tone and daring scatting and she has picked a fine band for this contemporary project, namely Matt Carter (piano), Al Swainger (double & electric bass) and Coach York (drums) and they frame Annika's assured vocals very well indeed.

Expect to hear effortless improvisation, technical prowess, tight rhythms delivered with passion and high energy. A must see.

The Annika Skoogh and Steve Dow Duo is a vocal and guitar duo brought together by a mutual love of bossa, latin, jazz and blues

Both well respected musicians in their own right, playing in various bands, this project provides space to explore material in a more intimate and stripped-back setting.

Multilinguist Annika also adds another dimension by singing some of the songs in different languages.

Annika's soulful vocals are beautifully complimented by Steve Dow’s wonderful guitar paying, the result is as impressive as it is spellbinding.

What other people say:

“Seriously good talent….what a voice!” Phonic FM

“What amazing voice and quality jazz” CICCIC Jazz Club

“A singular vocalist capable of both power and sweetness, sympathetically accompanied by a skilful Trio” St Ives Jazz Club

Velvet and Stone at Dart Music Festival

Singer-songwriter winners Velvet & Stone are coming...

...this three-girl, alt-folk/ blues trio are playing at Dart Music Festival

The band includes Holly and Lara on guitar and vocals, and Kat on violin.

Soulful, bluesy vocals, combined with guitar, haunting violin, and roots-songwriting. Velvet and Stone provide an original take on a traditional genre, blending personal tales, local stories, and landscapes with their chilled, acoustic vibe.

Velvet and Stone are Lara, Kat and Holly, all hailing from the small village of Silverton in Devon.

Holly and Lara both write, sing and play guitar, whilst Kat is a classically trained violinist, who has recently 'converted' to folk!

The band gigged for the first time as a trio in February 2014, and have rapidly made a name for themselves.

Velvet & Stone won 'The Song 2014' in 2014.

In July 2014, they won singer-songwriter competition 'The Song 2014' at Gloucestershire venue The Convent, where two of their original songs - 'Same Old Record' and 'The Storm' won over the judges making them the winners of the 'Judges Choice' category.

The girls recently had their first radio play on BBC Introducing in Devon in January 2015, with very positive reviews of their record 'Forget about the Rain'. They are currently recording their first EP, with Convent Records. This record will include a collection of their original songs, produced by musician/ producer Jack Henderson.

Dart Music Festival - Gimi Hendrix Experience returns

We were blown away by this great band at last year's Festival, so we're delighted to welcome them back again this year!

Gimi Hendrix - AKA Stu - from the band tells us:

"We played the Dart Music Festival for the first time last year and are really looking forward to coming back this year to play another set. We are performing on the bandstand stage and will be again playing lots of well known Hendrix classics and a few songs we didn't get to perform last year..."

The Gimi Hendrix Experience is made up of three professional musicians from the South West of England. Friends and band mates for a number of years, each member has  played in lots of musical projects and toured extensively around the UK and the rest of the world.

With a shared passion for the music of Jimi Hendrix, the band approaches every song with the respect it deserves and this is clear to see when the band performs the music they love.

Joe Murtagh photography

The Gimi Hendrix Experience is about keeping Jimi's music alive with an ethos of recreating the vibe and passion of the original experience.

The exciting live shows always go down well with their audiences, with a set list that includes all of Jimi's hit songs and a few lesser known tracks that stand up to the hits as great songs and should be heard live.
