Dart Music Festival - performance updates 3

The Gumbo Flyers

Formed way back when, the Gumbo Flyers were one of the first bands in Europe to embrace the infectious Cajun and Zydeco music of Louisiana.

This experienced group of musicians have toured worldwide - the Band’s high energy songs and stomps from the swamps have thrilled audiences at festivals and music venues across the continent, and their music has been embraced by radio stations back in Louisiana itself.

With their raw talent, relaxed professionalism and playful interaction, a performance of the Gumbo Flyers is a treat for tapping feet.

Holy Ebony & Band

The Holly Ebony band consists of Holly on vocals and guitar, Nick Marshall on lead and slide guitar, Conrad Singh on Double Bass and Jake Renbourn on percussion.

Holly tells us:

"I'm a singer and songwriter pouring out song from my beautiful corner of the world on the edge of Dartmoor.

Inspired by folk, soul and blues, my music tells stories from the wilderness around me and the depths of my spirit."

Hot Diggety

Barn-rattlin', farmyard-shakin' Hot Diggety have been wowing audiences in the South West with their own brand of Hillbilly Bop since the summer of 2010.
The 8-piece band from Modbury, Devon, combine 4-part vocal harmonies with cattle-stampeding rhythms in a set that mixes classic western tub-thumpers with their own, unique take on classic songs by the likes of Abba, Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

At festivals, music venues and private functions, Hot Diggety's infectious beats and great humour have had their audiences baying for more!

Jenna Witts

North Devon singer-songwriter Jenna is a free spirit with an effortless natural talent, who has been writing songs from the age of 12. An accomplished keyboards player and acoustic guitarist, she comes alive on stage with her infectious laugh and West Country humour – then startles people into silence with her amazingly mature voice, sass, attitude and elegance, to deliver wonderfully melodic songs; inspired by the sea, surf, love and life of the coast and beyond.

At 24, Jenna has toured with Steve Knightley (Show of Hands) as well as performing at ‘Show Of Hands’ sell out concert at The Royal Albert Hall. Jenna has also toured with Mercury prize nominee Seth Lakeman and supported Port Iaasac’s Fisherman’s Friends at their ‘The Minack Theatre’ open air concerts. She’s also played alongside other musicians including Newton Faulkner, The Noisettes, Nerina Pallot, Martin Simpson, Boo Hewerdine, Martyn Joseph, and Amy Wadge, and has most recently supported Elkie Brooks to a ‘sold out’ Queen’s Theatre in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

Calling all Festival-Makers - Dart Music Festival needs YOU..!

WANTED: FESTIVAL MAKERS – WE NEED YOU!!

An appeal from Sue Higgs,
Dart Music Festival Volunteers and Collection Co-Ordinator

Hi Everyone

This year has flown by and already Music Festival is looming ahead - only a month to go, and after all the months of hard work and planning we can hardly believe it is nearly upon us.

We are very pleased to announce that this year every performance is free to watch, but will actually cost around £50,000 to stage. Every performance will be un-ticketed and free to the public, making Dart Music Festival like no other Festival. We hope everyone will enjoy a vast array of performances and, as well as watching old favourites, can also discover and enjoy something new.

As you know, the Festival can only take place with the help of your good selves, as we rely on collections to put the whole event on and we really couldn’t do it without you – our FESTIVAL MAKERS!

‘Festival Makers’ really is what you are, because without you the Festival would not be able to take place. We try to cover all venues and with 150 events taking place over the three days, the more collectors we have the better. So - if you can spare an hour or two over the weekend and would like to become one of the team and join in all the fun, then I would love to hear from you.

I would like to thank you for all the support you have given us over the past years and sincerely hope that you are able to join us again. If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining the DMF team, then please feel free to pass on my contact information.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Jessica Mary York - cancellation at Dart Music Festival

We've just had the news that Jessica Mary York has had to cancel her performance at the Dart Music Festival, but luckily we have found a replacement in young singer-songwriter Polly Jackson.

Polly is an unsigned singer-songwriter from Worcestershire, currently studying music in Bath. Her musical genre is influenced by the likes of Adele, Birdy and Eva Cassidy, amongst others, and includes a mix of covers as well as her own original music with a soulful ballad bias of piano and vocals.

Being exposed to many musical genres at a young age, there are strong influences from her classically trained voice.

DUO DORADO at the Dart Music Festival

More about Duo Dorado and their amazing baroque repertoire, with Hazel Brooks on violin and David Pollock on harpsichord.

Hazel and David

Hazel Brooks studied at Clare College, Cambridge. After graduation she went on to study the violin at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, and the Guildhall School of Music in London, where she specialised in early music, owing much to the inspiring teaching of Micaela Comberti.  Here she won the Christopher Kite Memorial Prize and the Bankers Trust Pyramid Award, and she was a finalist in the international competitions in York and Antwerp.

As a baroque violinist, Hazel now works regularly as a recitalist and in chamber ensembles. She has given solo recitals in many major venues throughout the UK as well as in Germany, Russia and Spain.  She is frequently asked to lead orchestras and enjoys appearing as a concerto soloist.

Hazel also has an interest in unusual instruments and her recitals often include the viola d’amore.  She is in demand as a medieval-fiddle specialist throughout Europe and America, and has released recordings with the Boston Camerata, USA (Warner Classics), duo Trobairitz (Hyperion) and Duo Dorado (CRD and Singing Space).  She has also been involved in an inspiring project combining Western and Moroccan musicians.  Hazel has recently been appointed as a research fellow at the University of Southampton, investigating manuscripts of violin music from seventeenth-century England.

David Pollock studied at the Royal College and Royal Academy of Music.  He was inspired to take up historical performance because of a longstanding love for the music of J. S. Bach, and soon came to specialise in the harpsichord, winning the Croft Early Music First Prize.

Since then he has appeared at such venues as the Purcell Room, St John's Smith Square, St George's Bristol, St. David's Hall Cardiff, and Fairfield Halls Croydon, and has performed in international music festivals in Great Britain and abroad to critical acclaim.  He has established a reputation as an interpreter of the keyboard works of J. S. Bach and is in demand as a recitalist and concerto soloist.  Notable projects have included the harpsichord concertos of J. S. Bach and the virginals music of William Byrd.  Solo recordings include The French Harpsichord and O Mistris Myne:150 years of English virginals music (LIR), and he has also released a CD with the Parnassian Ensemble (Avie).

Duo Dorado
David is also interested in contemporary music and champions the harpsichord in this field.  Many composers have written specifically for him, including Colin Hand, Robert Page and Gavin Stevens.  As the collection grows, David hopes to compile a modern-day ‘Virginals Book’ which would tie together his interests in early and modern music.

Duo Dorado was formed in 1999 when Hazel and David discovered a shared passion for the baroque repertoire for obbligato harpsichord and violin.  The immediate success of the duo encouraged them to go on to explore the rich repertoire for violin and basso continuo, developing interpretations which highlight how successful this music can be with no more on the bass line than a richly resonant harpsichord.

The Duo has appeared extensively across the UK and also abroad, and has been praised for its dynamic presentation of a wide spectrum of music from established classics to that which is almost completely unknown. Their recordings include music by William Croft (CRD) and by Daniel Purcell, recently released on the Chandos label.  In addition to their ordinary concerts, Hazel and David are keen to promote baroque music beyond the formal setting of traditional concert halls.  They enjoy performing in less usual settings including museums, schools, village halls, libraries and even a Roman villa!  They also give informal recitals in private houses, which have proved very popular.

The Duo have recently released a new CD on the Chandos label of music by Daniel Purcell – thought for a long time to be Henry Purcell’s brother, but now considered to be his cousin.  Hazel has been researching early English violin sonatas and this is one of a series of projects which has come out of her research.  There is a page devoted to this on the website.

The Instruments:

David and Hazel say: We perform on period instruments – originals or copies of instruments of the type which would have been known to the composers themselves.  These instruments are often considerably different from their modern counterparts.  In addition both of us have spent time studying early playing techniques and baroque style.

Harpsichords:

Ruckers-Hemsch - This is a double-manual French-style instrument made by Anne and Ian Tucker in 1999.  It is a replica of the Ruckers-Hemsch harpsichord (1763) in the Cobbe Collection at Hatchlands Park, identical down to the individual brush-strokes of the painting.  It is strung in iron and brass, with free-range turkey quills.

Grimaldi - This is a single-manual Italian-style instrument made by Claire Hammett and Mark Ransom in 1993.  It is a Venetian model after Grimaldi c. 1700.  It has two eight-foot registers and is strung in brass, with turkey quills.

Virginal

Bowed Instruments:

Principal ways in which the baroque violin is different from its modern counterpart are the arched and pointed baroque-style bow, the gut strings and lack of chinrest, as well as a less angled neck.  The lower baroque bridge, lower tension, and lighter barring and soundpost inside the instrument are also worth noting.  This all goes to create a much sweeter sound than a modern violin, which blends very well with the harpsichord.

Baroque Violin - An original eighteenth century instrument in baroque set-up by the Viennese maker, Joannes Georgius Thir.

Renaissance violin - Copy of a sixteenth century instrument by Andrea Amati, by Nanny Hergils 2005. Strung all in gut with equal tension.

Viola D'Amore - Made by nanny Hergils 2004, after an eighteenth century Neapolitan instrument.

The Lost Sound Chorus at Dart Music Festival

The Lost Sound Chorus

The Lost Sound Chorus has had a remarkable year since performing at the Festival last May. They have been showered with appreciation for their singing and the vitality of their performances and are happily wooing South West audiences. They have been singing at Charity events and benefits to raise money for worthy causes throughout the last year and have also taken on and trained new singers. It’s been a busy and exciting year!

They have been applauded for their interesting and powerful programme, proving they are not shy of tackling the depth and emotion of a song. They love the vitality of their arrangements, full of textures, rhythms and layered harmonies with often 6 or 7 parts going at one time.  The programme has a beautiful folk influence underpinning both the singing and their delivery. Traditional heartfelt folk is re kindled with contemporary arrangements and woven between are new songs, with fresh perspectives, with an added splash of a pop hit or an Indie beat.

Quotes from audiences:

Christian Aid Benefit Dec 2012: “I'm not easily impressed but I was just blown away. I was sitting quite far back and I was surprised (perhaps shouldn't have been) at the power and projection.”

Wild Futures Benefit March 2013: I attended the concert last week and wanted to say how much I enjoyed it – in fact found it very moving; I have never seen a choir enjoy themselves so much in performance – it reminded me what it feels like to be ‘in love with music.”

The Lost Sound Chorus are delighted to be invited back to sing for you at The Flavel during the Dart Music Festival

In the words of a Facebook fan: If you haven't seen them get along and be prepared for fun, enthusiasm and high standards”

The Bookshop Band is coming to Dart Music Festival

The Bookshop Band

The Bookshop Band is coming to Dartmouth!

The Bookshop Band write songs inspired by books and are bringing their uniquely-inspired and accomplished songs to Dartmouth Library. Since their first event in September 2010, the band has written 75 songs inspired by 39 books from Andrew Miller’s “Pure” (2011 Costa Novel of the Year) to Rachel Joyce’s “The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry”, a locally relevant book about a man’s pilgrimage from Kingsbridge to see his old friend. The Bookshop Band will be playing between 1pm and 2pm on Saturday May 11th as part of the Dartmouth Music Festival, at Dartmouth Library, in The Flavel.

The Bookshop Band are three British musician/songwriters, Ben Please, Poppy Pitt and Beth Porter. They struck up a friendship whilst playing with their respective bands at UK music festivals in 2010 and decided to collaborate after their local bookshop proposed the idea in late 2010. Beth has played with Peter Gabriel and currently tours with Eliza Carthy. Ben is part of indie-folk band Urusen, who have recently recorded an album at Peter Gabriel’s Realworld Studio with platinum-selling producer Steve Osborne. Poppy Pitt is an artist and sculptor, and tours with her own band, Poppy and Friends. Ben and Beth also produced the music for a BAFTA winning short animation ‘The Eagleman Stag’.

The Bookshop Band has received significant radio coverage in the UK. Their first CD, Travels From Your Armchair, was available only from their local bookshop, but word soon spread and they were picked up by UK radio DJ Tom Robinson, who played them on his national show on BBC 6Music. More recently the band had a 10 minute feature on Kirsty Lang’s culture show, BBC Radio 4’s Front Row, and the band appeared on BBC 1 as part of a news feature on Britain’s independent bookshops.

Fabulous 59ford at The George and Dragon

Fabulous 59ford

Dart Music Festival Committee regret to announce that - due to a printing glitch - one of the concerts at the George & Dragon is unfortunately missing from the programme.

The very popular Fabulous 59ford – authentic five-piece 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll band with double bass, piano, guitars and drums who have headlined at most major festivals in the South West for over fifteen years – will be playing at the George and Dragon pub in Mayors Avenue on Saturday 11th May from 3.00 – 6.00pm.

The Committee offers its sincere apologies to our very good sponsors The George and Dragon, and thanks them for being so understanding.

This concert promises to be a knock-out so make sure you don’t miss it!

FANTASTIC FUNDRAISER AT LITTLE DARTMOUTH – A DMF TRIUMPH!

The Dart Music Festival Committee is delighted to report that the Gala Fundraising Evening at Little Dartmouth was an outstanding success. Our sincere thanks to Festival sponsors Sally and Edward Benthall who very kindly let us take over their wonderful barn last Saturday (April 6th) to host this fabulous event – so generous and very much appreciated.

Michael Bryan-Harris. Photo: Joe Murtagh

The evening kicked off with talented young musician Michael Bryan-Harris (DMF Foundation recipient) who played in the foyer to welcome our guests and get things off to a great musical start. Michael declared the setting ‘Brilliant!’ - and he didn’t lie!

The guests really entered into the spirit of the evening and arrived looking stunning in all their finery – they were greeted by Chairman Pam Braakenburg with a menu of the delights to come, a free raffle ticket,  and a delicious glass of chilled Kir Royale.

Pam says: “It was a wonderful event in a perfect setting. Everyone worked extremely hard but it is all made worthwhile by the fact that it helps to make all performances at the Dart Music Festival 'Free to all'…”

The DMF catering corps, who are very grateful to local chef Serin Aubrey for his help and guidance, really pulled out all the stops and created an incredible – not to mention extremely edible – array of top quality hot and cold canapes, with a hot meat or vegetable tagine with flatbreads served later in the evening.

Guests enjoying the band. Photo: Joe Murtagh
We received many heart-warming comments throughout the evening - which reassured us that all the months of planning, organisation and hard work had indeed been worthwhile. They include:

“I loved everything about it… Wonderful setting; wonderful music; wonderful food; wonderful wine; wonderful atmosphere – just wonderful!”

"Great event and great venue with really friendly hosts – thank you!”

“What a fabulous evening! We brought four friends with us who were absolutely blown away by the event. They wanted to congratulate you all on staging such an exciting and polished event and made special mention of the food and of course the wonderful entertainment. They were particularly impressed with the surroundings - what a glorious venue. Everything was so perfect - couldn't think of a thing you could have changed. Well done all!!”

“I’ve never seen such glamorous waitresses…”

“What a great evening!  It was a fabulous classy evening for everyone, one of the best fundraisers yet - both in entertainment and hopefully in money raised.”

Nuala Honan   Photo: Joe Murtagh
The entertainment was deemed second to none. As well as Michael’s welcome, we were also treated to songs from tuneful Nuala Honan (Medicine Creek), followed by our headline act – the exciting Electric Swing Circus - who got everyone either foot-tapping at their tables or up and dancing. If you saw them at last year’s Festival you’ll agree that it’s hard to keep still when this lively and popular band are playing, and I think it’s fair to say that a good time was had by all.
Electric Swing Circus Photo: Joe Murtagh

The superb selection of wines available from the bar was kindly donated by wine merchants Concha Y Toro, and the guests also enjoyed the prestigious DMF Auction with a quartet of very special lots. These were generously donated by Michael and Jane Madigan, Ray Barton, The Dart Marina Hotel, and Captain Jerry Kyd from the Britannia Royal Naval College, and local fish merchant Mark Lobb also kindly donated a side of smoked salmon for the free raffle.

The brilliant DMF Auction with Jake Moores.. Photo: Joe Murtagh

The DMF Team would like to thank all the people who were kind enough to make donations to this event, and also Chris and Andy on sound, official DMF photographer Joe Murtagh for his superb photographs, Jake Moores for his auctioneering skills, Janet Hall for being such a glamorous ‘hat-check girl’, Serin Aubrey for his foodie expertise and Phil Braakenburg for his magnificent kitchen skills, Sally and Edward’s family for helping us run up and downstairs with the coats - and in fact anyone who helped to make the evening such an amazing success, including of course all our wonderfully supportive guests.

Thank you so much to all our supporters – we couldn’t have done it without you!
