The orchestra celebrated its 15th anniversary last year, and it intends to celebrate its 30th. With their new Musical Director, Tony Hindley, the orchestra has grown in reputation and attracts guest professionals who give their time freely.
The orchestra plays a wide range of music to suit all tastes. In March this year they combined with the Britannia Choral Society to perform Mozart's Coronation Mass and the classical favourite Zadoc the Priest. The concert was held in a packed, standing room only, St Saviors church in Dartmouth to an enthralled audience. It is hoped that the concert will attract new faces to the concerts given by the two groups when they perform on their own.
Being a community orchestra all are welcome. Many who have come back to playing after layoffs due to life’s interruptions have found pleasure in rekindling a musical love. String players seem to be the most reluctant to come forward but they are the most needed to enable the orchestra to grow to enable it to play bigger works.
The orchestra will once again be playing during this year's Music
Festival. Each year they play a selection of light well-known classical
pieces.
Last year they played in the Flavel Church, which was full to overflowing, so this year they have moved to the larger venue of St Saviours Church.
Not only will the music be good, the newly renovated church is worth seeing in its own right...
To local players, come and join in and have fun. They meet to rehearse during term times in St Clement's Church Hall, Dartmouth. Saturdays 10 am to 12 noon. Free coffee/teas and biscuits.
